Corona Virus has become a part of our lives and will be with us for a long time. Common sense dictates that we face this reality and take care of ourselves and others by maintaining good health practices and most importantly—keeping a strong immune system. Wearing an appropriate mask, maintaining social distance between self and others, hand-washing, avoiding crowded public gatherings and other safety measures are invaluable to a prevention of the spread of Corona Virus infections.
The following is a list of preventive measures to keep you safe, healthy and immune strong! In the event you feel you’ve been exposed to Corona virus–the following steps are strongly recommended!
Elderberry syrup, supplements or gummies:
Take during periods of high transmission of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV. A triple combination containing elderberry, Vitamin C, and zinc may be a convenient approach. Patients with autoimmune disease should take for 2 weeks or less and monitor their symptoms closely.
Vitamin D: Increase your intake of Vitamin D. Vitamin D is a highly effective and inexpensive intervention to lessen the impact of Corona Virus. The risk of dying from Corona Virus is extremely reduced when taking Vitamin D supplements. [F1]
Vitamin C: 1000 mg. 2-3 times per day. Vitamin C is important in the treatment of a variety of bacterial and viral infections.
Star Anise Tea is recommended to alleviate Corona Virus symptoms as it has strong antiviral capabilities. Star Anise contains high concentrations of Shikimic Acid—which is an ingredient in Tamiflu, a medicine used to treat influenza. [F2]
Nasal spray with 1% povidone-iodine: two to three times a day. Povidone-iodine (also known as Betadine and widely used in hospitals) is an anti-bacterial and anti-viral that is affordable and available over-the-counter. [O1]
Zinc: 30-40 mg daily. Zinc is essential for innate and adaptive immunity. Zinc supplements come in various forms (e.g., zinc sulfate, zinc citrate and zinc gluconate).
Melatonin: Begin with 1 mg. and increase as tolerated to 6 mg before bedtime (causes drowsiness). A slow-release capsule is preferred. Melatonin has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant properties important in the management of Corona Virus infections.
Curcumin (turmeric): 500 mg twice a day. Curcumin interferes with viral absorption, entry and replication. It has low solubility in water and is poorly absorbed by the body; it is traditionally taken with full fat milk and black pepper, which enhance its absorption. [F2] [O1]
Nigella sativa (black cumin): 80 mg/kg daily and Honey 1 g/kg daily. Both honey and Nigella sativa have antiviral, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Probiotics: Kefir is a fermented milk drink high in Bifidobacterium and other probiotics that have demonstrated health benefits and immune enhancement.
Mouthwash: three times a day.
Gargle three times a day (do not swallow) with an antiseptic-antimicrobial mouthwash containing chlorhexidine, cetylpyridinium chloride (e.g., ScopeTM, ActTM, CrestTM) or povidone-iodine. [O1]
Steam inhalation: once a day.
Inhaled steam supplemented with antimicrobial essential oils are beneficial. Vicks VapoRubTM inhalations has been demonstrated to have virucidal activity. Antimicrobial essential oils include lavender, thyme, peppermint, cinnamon, eucalyptus and sage.
Ivermectin: 0.2 mg/kg or 0.4 mg/lb – Can be used as a preventive medication, start treatment with one dose, take second dose 48 hours later, then 1 dose every 7 days (weekly). For treatment of Corona Virus, Ivermectin is best taken with a meal or just following a meal, for greater absorption. [O1]
Quercetin (or a mixed flavonoid supplement): 250-500 mg daily.
Due to a possible interaction between quercetin and ivermectin, these drugs should not be taken simultaneously (i.e., should be staggered at different times of day). [O1]
